Audi Reveals 2014 R18 Racing Car, Now with Laser Headlights

 Audi has revealed its refreshed 2014 R18 e-tron Quattro racing car that is to be used throughout next year. At first glance, it doesn’t differ significantly from this year’s outgoing model, but it does have one cool new feature that’s still very rare: laser headlights, similar in tech to those used by BMW on the i8 where they are optionally available.“The new laser light is just one of numerous technical innovations featured by our new R18,” said the recently appointed head of Audi’s Motorsport wing, Wolfgang Ullrich, who added that “We’re not going to reveal any more than that at this early stage, as in 2014 we’re facing an extremely tough competition and a year full of challenges for Audi Sport.” So, this means that apart from some photos and hardly any explanation as to how their headlights differ from BMW’s or in regards to any of the other changes, we’ll have to wait for them to announce what this “year full of chances” actually means, and what novel ideas will push it forward. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Opel Investigated for Tax Fraud in Greece

   In a somewhat strange twist of events since it’s usually the Europeans, and in particularly, the Germans, who have been dubious about Greek tax authorities and practices, news magazine Der Spiegel reported that the Mediterranean country's inspectors are investigating three major German carmakers for possible tax fraud. Theodoros Floratos, the head of Greece's Financial and Economic Crime Unit (SDOE) confirmed the report that said the carmakers being under investigation are BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Opel. The reason why SDOE is looking into these companies is that it suspects the aforementioned German carmakers are delivering their vehicles to their respective partners in Greece at extremely low factory prices, which the government uses as a base for a number of taxes – the lower the factory price, the less taxes paid to the country. As an example, the report mentions the Mercedes-Benz S 500 CGI Blue Efficiency that has an in-house importer price of only €22,135 ($30,282), but sells for six times that, with a retail price (inclusive of all taxes) of €124,450 (US$170,300). If you're wondering, in the States, the S 550 costs $92,900 (excluding sales tax – i.e. 6.25% in Massachusetts).

Thanks to 3-D scanners, designers can quickly reverse engineer and update the master math model, and then apply them to the physical model by milling the clay. GM has used 3-D scanning since 2001, but the Elmiraj is the first drivable concept car for which this technology has been used to validate nearly every pattern, mold and part during each phase of the vehicle build. “With the Elmiraj, we were able to use 3-D scanning as the bridge between traditional hand-sculpting teams who work in clay and digital modeling design teams who work in math,” said Frank Saucedo, director of General Motors ’ North Hollywood Advanced Design Studio. Not only that, but 3-D scanning allows designers to revert to a previous design phase. “A scan can even reveal the need to take a step back to a previous iteration, and 3-D scanning makes it relatively easy to do,” said David Bolognino, director of GM Design Fabrication Operations. Probably the best part of 3-D scanning is that it makes possible the transition from a scale model to a full-size model in less than one week, speeding up the design process. However, as the hybrid model is only offered on the top-spec Autobiography model, there’s a big problem: it costs £98,400 in the UK, the same as the 510hp V8-powered Range Rover . After GTI, Consumer Reports Tries out Regular VW Golf Too

a The Consumer Reports first drive of (a Euro-spec) Volkswagen Golf leaves nothing to question, just like the car itself. It makes it clear that you can’t really fault it on the mundane stuff (space, practicality, economy or drive), and that American buyers should give it more of a shot than they previously, as this seventh incarnation coming in early 2014 is bigger inside and out, yet lighter than before and very efficient. The Golf, like most other US-bound VWs , ditches the 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine as the range base, replacing it with a new 1.8-liter turbo unit that offers the same power as before (170 hp), yet a bit more torque, most of which is served low in the rev range. As usual, whenever a car reviewer climbs aboard a modern VW, he or she raves on about how everything is nice to the touch and feels well screwed together – the new Golf is no exception, though I do feel that it’s a step down in perceived solidity from the brick-like Mark V model. To me it just felt a bit flimsier than before, and the seat no longer goes down as low as it did in the older models thanks to the MQB platform (SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia both have the same issue). a A report from USA Today says that Ford’s exeutive VP in charge of global marketing, Jim Farley, recently announced that Lincoln may, in fact, switch from the current American naming scheme to one that revives old historic names, but only for the Chinese audience . The arguments that stand behind the reasoning are a) the brand has a lot of iconic names under its belt that it no longer uses and b) it is apprently believed that Chinese people actually remember the old days of Lincoln luxury, what the cars from that period were called and what they stood for. Deems quite unlikely given the cultural and historic background of the country, but we’ll see how it pans out for them once the fully-fledged country-wide introduction enters full swing. So, in a weird turn of events, North America, which is the traditional home market for Lincoln cars will boast models designated by three capital letters, the first two of which are “MK,” while China will get Zephyrs and Continentals. SRT Viper Doing Just Fine Thanks You Very Much, Says Brand Boss

a SRT may have reduced Viper production by 33 percent earlier this year, but the iconic sports car is here to stay. The message was sent from SRT CEO Ralph Gilles at the Los Angeles Auto Show , where the executive stressed that the Viper has a bright future. “The plant is booked solid. We actually have several hundred units outstanding we still have to build,” Gilles said in an interview with WardsAuto at the auto show. He admitted, however, that the launch of the fifth-generation Viper was not ideally timed. “We had a very late launch. We were six months offset from where we wanted to be,” Gilles explained. Because sales only began in April and deliveries followed later, the Viper missed the spring selling season. Furthermore, dealers were not prepared to deal with the new model’s extensive list of optional equipment and ordered cars that they had a hard time selling. “I don’t think our network understands the segment very well. I think the mistake we’re making is understanding the customer who spends $130,000 to $140,000 for a car. They want what they want – their color, their stripe, their package, their interior. And dealers were trying to anticipate the market ended up creating a car that may not be the right car,” Gilles explained. To make sure that doesn’t happen again, Chrysler has launched a fourth-quarter training program across the U.S. that pair dealers with existing Viper owners and potential customers, with the latter getting test drives of the vehicles. Gilles also said all 159 units of the limited-edition Viper Time Attack have been sold in three days after orders opened up, and that the 50 Viper GTS models with Anodized Carbon paint are already spoken for. a Surprise, surprise, the European Union, the one that appeared to buckle under Germany ’s immense corporate interest pressure not to enforce strict emissions laws by the year first specified will be going forward with the half-assed version of the original plan that as a Reuters report says "delays 100 percent implementation of a limit of 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre (CO2/km) for all new cars until 2021 from a previous deadline of 2020." The big luxury car manufacturers, the ones that do most of the tailpipe emitting, were the ones that expressly asked for more leniency. The same report reminds us that the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel , whose party “received money (donations) from BMW,” persuaded everybody that she was safeguarding jobs. That she may very well be doing, but it’s an indirect and happy coincidental side effect, while the air of dishonesty and corporate intrigue and interest above all is thick, if you ask me. The final decision regarding the matter at hand, though, will be taken on Friday, when the deal will be “presented to a meeting of EU diplomats… with a view to getting their agreement,” according to Arunas Vinciunas, ambassador for Lithuania, which holds the rotating EU presidency. BMW’s M Performance Parts for 2-Series Coupé Bring More Style and Power

a When sales of the all-new BMW 2-Series Coupé begin in March 2014, the carmaker will also offer a series of retrofit styling and performance upgrades under the BMW M Performance name. Developed for all variants of the 2-Series Coupé range, the BMW M Performance parts are designed in close collaboration with BMW M GmbH and involve exterior and interior styling, as well as drivetrain, suspension and aerodynamics upgrades. For the BMW 220d Coupé the carmaker offers a power kit that increases the output of the 4-cylinder diesel engine by 16 hp (16PS) to 197 hp (200PS) and maximum torque by 40 Nm (29.5 lb-ft) to 420 Nm (310 lb-ft). The upgrades don’t affect fuel consumption and exhaust emission figures, according to the Bavarians. For the BMW M235i Coupé , BMW M Performance offers a limited-slip differential on the rear axle that improves traction in corners, as well as a silencer system that reduces exhaust gas pressure to produce a sportier sound. Additionally, BMW M Performance tailpipe trim elements are offered in chrome or carbon, bearing the M logo. Other performance parts for all model variants include a 20mm (0.78in) lower sports suspension, a BMW M Performance braking system with brake calipers painted in a choice of red, yellow or orange, as well as 19-inch forged light alloy wheels available in two design versions. Styling upgrades include the BMW M Performance Aerodynamic Kit available for the front apron, black decorative grid for the BMW kidney grille, exterior caps in carbon, side sill foils with M Performance inscription and BMW M Performance accent stripes in two color versions. a  It’s the last Thursday of November which means only one thing for anyone living in the States: we're one day before hordes of people storm the stores at absurd times for black Friday deals – no, I just (partially) kid; it’s Thanksgiving 2013 and we'd like to pass along our best wishes to everyone out there from the team here at Carscoops .We'll be taking some time off until Sunday to recharge our engines and be with our families, but don't worry, we'll still bring you news and interesting stories, just at a slower pace over the next few days. Since Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and we are an automotive site, we thought about asking you what used car priced under the more widely affordable threshold of $10,000 would you appreciate to drive today. You can give us one or more proposals in the comments section with pictures. As far as I'm concerned, my first choice would be an 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 Coupe I found on eBay with a current highest bid of $7,305 and a "low reserve", but to be frank, I doubt it will go for less than $10k… But it looks damn good in the pictures and I just had to add it – what can I say; I'm a sucker for classic RWD Italian sports cars. While I couldn't find the Alfa's list price on the seller's site at SpeedSports, what I did discover there is my second application for today's drive, a 1983 AM General M923 6X6 Cargo Cummins Allison H1 Military Hummer for $7,290. Do I really need to explain why I would want to drive one of these monsters? As for my third option, I think I'd go for a classic 1980s all-white Corvette (listed at $5,000 ), which besides offering some RWD fun, it would also blend well with a white t-shirt under a shoulder-padded, pastel-colored jacket to surely annoy the hell out of anyone asking you to dress properly during a family meeting. Premiere: New Mercedes SLC or GT AMG is a smaller and more affordable replacement for the SLS

We have come to know it as the Mercedes-Benz SLC, but rumors floating in the air on the other side of the pond say that it could end up using the nickname of GT AMG; what it calls the brand with the star, this supercar in any way replace the SLS AMG four years, production of which will end next summer.We say "in any way", because while the SLC (that we call what by now to avoid that you confused you), will become the main Merc sports car offering, is not a direct successor to the SLS AMG as it will be smaller, lighter, less exclusive (outside the doors style 'Gullwing') and cheaper than the current car.That does not mean that you can run your hands and get ready to change your class C in SLC, but with a starting price that rumored (have not confirmed) to hover just above the mark of $100,000 compared with the SLS AMG $200,000 entry MSRP (or €190,000 in Germany), bring to Mercedes Porsche 911 Carrera S and Turbo and Audi R8 territory.Believed that they used a modified version and shortest of architecture in the still fresh SLS aluminum spaceframe, the SLC will lead a new 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 instead of the 6.2 V8 naturally aspirated liters found under the hood of the Gullwing model.It is likely that will be the front unit in different outputs, depending on the version, but always linked to an automatic double clutch seven-speed operated with steering wheel paddle shifters and placed inside the rear axle Assembly to achieve a better balance of weight between the two extremes.In its basic configuration, the V8 should produce close to 500 HP and around 600 in the harder versions as the Black Edition.Photo credits: CarPix for CarScoopS

This variant adds nothing to the mechanical level compared to the Turbo "normal" because it is the same block 1.6 L Turbo GDI delivering 201 hp and 265 Nm that propels the two versions.The R -Spec version of a team TVC system (Torque Vectoring Control) which, thanks to electronics, plays a similar role to that of a limited slip differential . It allows us to offer better stability in fast curve and greater agility in turns to cut a little lacking liveliness in his behavior. Experience the Vector M12 – America’s Mid-Nineties’ Lamborghini

a  The Vector M12 is a very rare supercar built in the United States between 1995 – 1999 in only 17 examples (not 14 as the video title would have you believe). Its body looked Italian, even though it was not, but the chassis and engines were both derived from those used in the period Lamborghini Diablo supercar. Power from the 5.7-liter V12 engine was rated at around 490 hp, while torque was around 576 Nm, or 425 lb-ft; the benchmark sprint came up in a mediocre 4.8 seconds, while top speed was a more acceptable 304 km/h or 190 mph. The video posted below shows two of these uber-rare fiberglass-bodied machines, one of which is wearing the US stars and stripes, being featured in magazines back in the day, while the other one is yellow. The latter is the car that is driven, and while it may lack the purity of the true Italians, it still looks very interesting, even all these years after it was launched and quickly phased out due to its high price. Perhaps it’s better that there are very few of these, and it makes it all the more interesting. Driving a Ferrari F12b Legally at Over 300km/h in Germany

a  After seeing the result of the Ferrari F12berlinetta crash in the Netherlands (not Belgium as initially reported), it’s nice to see one of these front-engined supercars on the road, going fast and not sliding off, hitting a tree and landing on its side . This video shows a white F12 being driven as fast as possible on a derestricted stretch of German autobahn. As you may know, slower cars and trucks that are late in changing lanes, and sometimes standing water too, are the two biggest speed-impeding factors when attempting to go flat out in these situations. However, with 740 hp on tap, the average F12 driver can, with relative ease, get the car up to and just over 300 km/h or 186 mph even with some traffic, as you will undoubtedly have seen upon scrolling down to until after the virtual jump. It’s actually an enjoyable piece of footage , and luckily the passenger doesn’t need to diagonally film across the car, as Ferrari has gone the extra mile and added a monochrome digital display showing gear, speed and revs just above the glove compartment. a  You must really live perched atop a mountain, or at the bottom of some remote, inaccessible valley in order to even begin to try and justify paying close to $700,000 for a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 ; even once you think you need it, it’s still ridiculous . But it’s here, and it’s not some suburb shed hack-job, being a fully-fledged different AMG model in its own right, and probably the most capable off-roader you could buy at any price, as MotorTrend’s Jonny Lieberman found out, when he recently pitted the six-wheeler against the normal G63 . It all went down in Graz, Austria , less than a stone’s throw away from the Steyr factory that has been assembling the Geländewagen since 1979, on both purpose-built off-road proving grounds and natural ones. Naturally, the 6x6 cruised up all obstacles with ease, and while the four-wheeled variant is practically just as capable, the bigger vehicles extra traction advantage, extra ground clearance and extra kudos for taking massive jumps in its stride (literally) nudged the polls in its favor. Maserati Bora Concept

The shape of this Bora Concept is slender, sporty and the front is even more aggressive than what we currently know about the cars of the firm Modena nothing. In the drawing, there are elements of style as Maserati grille, air vents on the front wings, the air intakes on the front cover so MC12, the logo on the amount or the taillights inspired by those of future SUV Levante.The whole is successful however we regret, drawing alloy wheels too busy and almost quaint! A beautiful work that must be the designer Alexander Imnadze which does not specify what engine it plans in the beautiful long rear window. 2 BMW series Coupe carries on series 1 Coupe in our Visual comparison test

BMW launched the Series 4 and 2 nameplates as part of its plan to differentiate models that are derived models Coupe and cabriolet - in this case the series 3 and series 1, respectively.We have already seen how the new series 4 Coupe looks in comparison to its predecessor, now it is time to take a close look in lieu of the differences between the new Coupe 2-series and model, the Coupe series 1.My opinion (feel free to disagree) is that the Coupe series 2 is a significant improvement over the Coupe series 1 of the 4-series Coupe with respect to its predecessor, the series 3 Coupe.It has a lot to do with the front of the car, where the awkward aspect of the series 1 Coupe headlights (have always believed that a look sad and confused gave the car at the same time) have been replaced by thinner units, "happier" more attractive. The Coupé series 2 seems more self-confident, an impression given also by the "smiling" kidneys and muscle cover.When viewed from the sides and the back, the differences between the two cars are less obvious, despite some key details. The series 2 has a sleeker profile thanks to the campaign and the wheelbase slightly longer, while the back design gives the impression of the car is wider. In general, I think that the foreign style Coupé series 2 represents clear progress compared with its predecessor.Inside, looks Coupe series 1 date less than on the outside, but I think that the 2-series Coupe has the advantage here, thanks to more sculpted the dashboard and the central console driver-oriented. VW Surprised by the Popularity of its Diesel Models in the U.S.

a  Volkswagen of America CEO Jonathan Browning said he’s surprised by the rate Americans are adopting diesel-powered models . Volkswagen is the market leader in the light-duty diesel vehicle segment in the U.S., holding a 72 percent market share - the equivalent of about 90,000 cars per year. In the first ten months of this year, diesel vehicles made up 22 percent of Volkswagen of America’s total sales, far exceeding the company’s expectations. As the first diesel model in the U.S. mid-size sedan market, the VW Passat TDI had a key contribution to this result. VW worried that customers may not only be reluctant to diesel, but to the brand as well, as it had to conquest a lot of customers from competitors. “We thought the step to convert them to the Volkswagen brand was going to be a fairly substantial step in itself, and then it would be an even bigger step to convert to diesel,” Jonathan Browning was quoted as saying by Autocar. Browning added that diesel models suit American driving habits and the fuel economy they deliver is just incredible for consumers. “In fact, because it is such a compelling offer – almost 800 miles range, and with the typical US driving profile, it is possible to get even better-than-published fuel economy with the diesel because there’s a lot of highway driving – customers are just raving about it,” the executive added. AC Schnitzer Adds More Goods to BMW 4-Series Tuning Program

a  On the occasion of the Essen Motor Show that takes in place in Germany from November 30 to December 8, AC Schnitzer has enhanced its tuning program for the new BMW 4-Series Coupe, with the most important additions being performance upgrades for the 420i, 430d and 435d models. For the 420i, the Aachen-based tuning company's kit lifts the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine's output from 181hp (184PS) to 242hp (245PS) or to the same level as the stock 428i, while for the 430d, its 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel now delivers 305hp (309PS). Finally, AC Schnitzer gives the straight-six diesel 435d a push to 355hp (360PS), up from 309hp (313PS). As a reminder, the firm's existing upgrades boost the 428i's turbo'd inline-four from 241hp (245PS) to 290hp (294PS), the 435i's 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six from 302hp (306PS) to 355hp (360PS) and the 420d's diesel-four from 181hp (184PS) to 215hp (218PS). Other available performance parts for the 4-Series Coupe include a 25mm-lowered suspension or a fully adjustable racing suspension and a wide choice of forged alloy wheels. On the cosmetic front, there's a body kit with a rear roof spoiler, and front and rear aprons for both regular and M Sport models, plus a chrome grille piece, while for the interior, there's a gear knob with an illuminated digital gear display, floor mats and trim accents.

New 1996 Nissan 300ZX with Only 145 Miles Could be Yours for $85,987

a  You can add the Z32 Nissan 300ZX to the list of cars that I have had the chance to drive and wouldn't mind owning one day, just as long as I find the right one at the right price, of course.The right one would be a late model year Turbo with a 300bhp 3.0-liter V6 featuring twin Garrett turbochargers and dual intercoolers, but I would settle with the regular 222bhp 3.0-liter V6 model, as long as it came with a stick shift, which happens to be the case of our latest find. Even better, it's virtually brand new and unused with only 145 miles (233 kilometers) on the odometer. However, there's one huge problem; the Greensboro Nissan dealer's asking price of $85,987, which is absurdly high for this car. Don't forget that we are talking about a base version of a Japanese coupe of which more than 160,000 examples were built during its lifespan (1989–2000), so it's neither rare nor that desirable. We had posted a story on a black-on-black 1996 300ZX T-Top Coupe with 144 miles that was listed for sale on eBay this past April, but it had chrome rims, while this one sports satin-finish wheels – we don't know for sure if it's the same car as the ad has since been removed. Spy Shots: New Audi S1 Quattro Hot Hatch for the Masses, Previews A1 Facelift Too

aLooks like Audi will try to please (at least partially) all those who were unable to obtain one of the 333 examples of the limited run 256PS (253bhp) A1 Quattro with the release of a slightly less potent and extreme, but regularly available S1 Quattro hot hatch. Spied here wearing its production body parts, this S1 Quattro prototype also previews an upcoming facelift for the rest of the A1 range as it was fitted with re-shaped headlamps and revised taillights. Along with the three-door version seen in these photos, Audi will also release a five-door S1 Quattro Sportback , with both cars featuring a light bodykit with the usual "S" cosmetic upgrades including bigger wheels, a dedicated front grille, sport bumpers, aero parts and quad exhaust tips. Under the hood, Audi is believed to use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing somewhere around 220-hp paired to its all-wheel drive 'quattro' system. Meet the Cars With a Five-Star Rating in EuroNCAP's Latest Tests [w/Videos]

a  We’ve seen the cars that achieved a four-star rating , now it’s time to meet the best performers of EuroNCAP ’s latest crash-test session. Six cars were awarded the maximum five-star rating: Ford Tourneo Connect, Infiniti Q50, Maserati Ghibli, Mazda3, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Peugeot 308. Both luxury cars tested, the Infiniti Q50 and Maserati Ghibli, offered good overall protection. The Infiniti scored 86 percent for adult occupants, 85 percent for child occupants and 67 percent for pedestrians. The Japanese model also received an 81-percent rating for safety assist. Just tested by the IIHS , the Ghibli was awarded the highest score (95 percent) for adult occupant protection of the 11 cars assessed by EuroNCAP. Child occupant protection was rated at 79 percent, pedestrian protection at 74 percent and safety assist at 81 percent. EuroNCAP gave good ratings to both compact cars tested, the Mazda3 and Peugeot 308 . The Japanese car scored 93 percent for adult occupant protection; 86 percent for child occupant, 65 percent for pedestrian and 81 percent for its safety assist systems. The Peugeot got a 92 percent rating for protection offered to adult occupants, 79 percent for child occupants, 64 for pedestrians and 81 percent for safety assist. The Ford Tourneo Connect passenger van was equally impressive, with a 94 percent rating for adult occupant protection, 85 percent for child occupant protection, 62 percent for pedestrians and 70 percent for safety assist. Finally, EuroNCAP also awarded five stars to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which was rated 88 percent for adult occupant protection, 84 percent for child occupant, 64 percent for pedestrian and 81 percent for safety assist. Nissan Qashqai 2014 : The manufacturer will close in 10 days

Land Rover : Range Rover Grand Evoque expected in 2016

Grand Evoque or Evoque XL or simply Evoque LWB , several names are already circulating in the future Range Rover Evoque extended which should reach the market in 2016 and on which current JLR great hope . Presented there is 10 months in Detroit , ELR coupe arrives at U.S. retailers where this new electric Cadillac is attracting "green" customers, easier than the more common Chevrolet Volt which it borrows technical basis.

The ELR takes much of the technology and mechanics of the Chevrolet . We thus find the 1.4 L L4 engine high gasoline 86 hp which acts as a generator for the electric motor . But unlike the Volt , power is more important since the ELR develops 207 hp , 400 Nm , while the Volt is limited to 151 hp and 370 Nm Cadillac announced a total range of 480 km with the Range Extender and 58 km in all-electric mode.

However, this Cadillac ELR is pay dearly technology and its logo! We are so far from the price anticipated at the beginning of the year. At the time, a rate of about $ 60,000 to 62,000 and was considered in October 2013 , we find that the price of this car is $ 75,995 (without the deduction of federal aid ) which is very expensive especially when faced with the competition including the dreaded Tesla Model S billed $ 81,000 with engine 85 kWh.

VM Motori : Fiat now in sole command

The case was in the air since a few weeks since Fiat wished for a few months . It just confirms what day since GM sold its shares up 50 % stake in the Italian company Fiat SpA mechanical . The amount of the transaction between the two carmakers amounted to 47.1 million (34.1 million Euros ) and it allows the Turin group to fully integrate the engine company within its structure. Remains to be seen whether VM Motori will remain a separate entity or whether it will integrate Fiat Power Train?

General Motors took a 50% share of the diesel specialist VM Motori in 2007 and Fiat had bought the remaining 50% of the company in 2010 . Unfortunately for GM , projects and studies currently serving the Italian group and its U.S. subsidiary since including the 3.0 L V6 found under the hoods of the CRD , Ghibli , Quattroporte , Thema , Gd Cherokee or RAM 1500 pending further assignments the group .What will be the future creations of the Italian manufacturer that produce between 90,000 and 95,000 engines for the automotive , agriculture and boats.
